Cystitis refers to irritations or bacterial infections that occur anywhere from the lining of the vagina through the urethra, to the lining of the bladder. These infections can occur in a single episode or recurrent episodes, or can exist as chronic conditions. Cystitis is common in sexually active women, and women in menopause have a tendency to develop cystitis because, as estrogen levels decline, bacteria is more prone to adhere to the bladder lining and vaginal tissue.
Symptoms include burning and pain on urination, increased urinary urgency and frequency, pain over the pubic area or lower back, and increased urination throughout the night. In women, as severity increases, blood may color the urine red. Signs that the kidneys have also become involved are fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, and severe high back and/or loin pain.
